Motorola MA1 adds wireless Android Auto to cars, launches in Australia

After months of overseas availability, the Motorola MA1 wireless car adapter for Android Auto is now available in Australia, allowing users to access phone apps through a car’s in-built display.

A plug-and-play device, the Motorola MA1 inserts into your car’s USB port to transform any Android Auto-compatible car display into a wireless Android phone hub. This removes the need to constantly plug in your phone to pair it with your vehicle while providing Google Assistant functionality. When connected, your phone’s apps appear on the car display, allowing safe and easy access to your phone while driving.

Over 500 car models in Australia support Android Auto, with a full compatibility list including many manufacturers and aftermarket stereo brands. Another requirement is that Android phones must be running on Android 11 OS or later and have access to mobile data. The device uses a combination of 5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology to communicate with your phone when connected.

We’ll have a review of our hands-on time with the Motorola MA1 dongle soon. In the meantime, several overseas publications praised the device following its original launch earlier in the year. Phillip Tracy from Gizmodo was impressed by the adapter’s easy setup process, high quality, and reliability in addition to its portable size. Meanwhile, Tom Pritchard echoed similar sentiments in a review for Tom’s Guide.

The Motorola MA1 is now on Amazon for $159 and is also available across selected Telstra stores throughout the country. It looks to be an impressive little gadget for Android users looking to eliminate annoying cables in the car. Arguably the biggest benefit will be a much better way to use Google Maps when travelling.
