Roku TV finally comes to Australia courtesy of TCL

Finally, Roku TV is coming to Australia. After years of operating overseas, the popular TV operating system, Roku OS, will soon reach our shores in TVs from budget brand TCL.

From November, 55-inch and 65-inch 4K UHD TCL Roku TVs will be available from JB Hi-Fi for $699 and $899 respectively. Installed with Roku OS, these TVs include access to thousands of streaming channels, ranging from Netflix and Disney+, to local platforms Stan and 7plus. Freeview is also supported, giving you access to local free-to-air channels.

Although not in its native form, Roku has previously had an Australian presence via a partnership with Telstra in 2015 for the Telstra TV streaming platform. Now, with Roku OS on the upcoming TCL TVs, we’ll have access to the Roku Channel Store, where you can browse the many available streaming channels. Additionally, the OS also sorts search results by price, so you can find the cheapest way to watch your favourite shows and movies.

A free Roku mobile app lets you control the TCL Roku TVs, too, eliminating the need for extra remote controls. It also supports casting media from compatible devices to the TV in addition to screen-mirroring through AirPlay 2. Other notable features include Dolby Vision and HDR functionality, automatic software updates, and high energy efficiency ratings. The 55-inch model has a 7-star energy rating, while the 65-inch has an even better 8-star rating, making both sets among the most energy-efficient TVs in Australia.

Should you be excited about Roku TV?

Given the broad landscape of TV operating systems and streaming devices available in Australia, Roku may not make as big a splash as it might have several years ago. However, it is a widely popular platform overseas, having also shipped with other affordable brands including Hisense and Philips. Reports from international publications indicate Roku TVs tend to be user-friendly and provide a good overall streaming experience. We’re about to find out for ourselves as the new TCL sets arrive this month.
