Motorola Razr Ultra 40 has biggest cover display of a foldable yet

Motorola has come out swinging overnight, launching three new phones, including the Razr 40 Ultra, Razr 40, and the Edge 40.

Further bolstering its foldable range, the Razr 40 phones follow last year’s model, which was one of the best foldable phones we’ve used. Easily the most visible upgrade comes with the Razr 40 Ultra, brandishing a 3.6-inch cover display that takes up nearly the whole top half of the phone when folded. It’s even larger than the Oppo Find N2 Flip’s 3.26-inch cover display.

Both the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Edge 40 phones come in Viva Magenta, the 2023 Pantone Colour of the Year. This is notable because Motorola has committed to donating a portion of sales of its new Viva Magenta phones to Breast Cancer Network Australia. Unfortunately, the base Razr 40 model does not come in this colour.

Motorola goes even bigger with the Razr 40 Ultra

Built with content creators and keen photographers in mind, the Razr 40 Ultra features a 12MP main camera with a wide f/1.5 aperture for taking shallow depth-of-field shots with soft backgrounds. Accompanying it is a 13MP ultrawide and macro camera, alongside a 32MP selfie camera.

Like its predecessor, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra lets you fold the phone in various configurations such as Flex View, where half the screen is propped up like a stand. Its main pOLED display is 6.9 inches in size with a 2640 x 1080 resolution and up to a 165Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the 3.6-inch pOLED cover display has a 1066 x 1056 resolution and a refresh rate of up to 144Hz for smooth viewing.

On the inside is the Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile CPU, 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, 256GB of storage, and Android 13 out of the box. There’s a 3800 mAh battery, which is slightly up from the 2022 Razr’s 3500 mAh capacity.

As a cheaper alternative, Motorola has segmented its new foldable form factor for the first time. The base Razr 40 model has a smaller 1.5-inch cover display, along with similar internal specs other than using the slightly older Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Mobile CPU. One benefit of the slightly reduced specs is longer battery life, as the cheaper model has a larger 4200 mAh battery life. It also has higher megapixel cameras, too, with a 64MP main camera and a 32MP selfie camera.

Out on 10 July, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra costs $1,499 with pre-orders starting on 13 June. Available slightly later on 21 July, the base Razr 40 model costs $999, with pre-orders opening on 10 July.

Motorola’s core 2023 upgrade: the Edge 40

If you prefer your phones non-foldable, the Motorola Edge 40 exists for just that purpose. An upgrade over the brand’s Edge 30 series, the 40 is billed as a premium phone experience, from its design to its camera array, and rapid charging capacity.

Out on 10 July alongside the Razr 40 Ultra, the Motorola Edge 40 costs $699.

More details to come.
