Pencil 10 September into your calendars, as that’s when we’ll likely get a concrete release date for the iPhone 16 range.
It’s not yet official from Apple, but the reliable word from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is that the launch event will take place on Tuesday 10 September in the US. For us in Australia, that’ll fall early in the morning on 11 September, similar to past events.
It confirms earlier iPhone 16 speculation about the release date, with the handsets tipped to arrive in stores starting on Friday 20 September. New iPhones also mean a fresh range of Apple Watches in addition to refreshed AirPods.
Gurman’s reporting suggests that the fourth-generation AirPods will come in two variants, including one that supports active noise cancellation. In the past, only the AirPods Pro models included the ANC feature.
Previous reporting indicates that the iPhone 16 will be a relatively straightforward year-on-year upgrade from 2023’s iPhone 15 range. Other than a new A18 chip, expect to see subtle hardware differences. The base iPhone 16 models could get the Action button previously exclusive to the “Pro” range, while the new Pro phones seem set to get a dedicated camera shutter button.
Arguably the biggest feature coming to the iPhone 16s is Apple Intelligence, the company’s big foray into generative AI technology as part of the upcoming iOS 18 update.
Recent leaks teased the potential colours of the Pro phones, which sparked impassioned discussion on various Apple forums. These purported colours are rather sedate, while the base iPhone 16 handsets could include a brighter spectrum of hues.
Stay tuned for official confirmation of Apple’s iPhone 16 launch event and release date, both of which appear to be all but set in stone.
