Hubbl gets Optus Sport app for all the global soccer action

It’s been a bit of a wait, but Australian soccer fanatics can now stream Optus Sport on Foxtel’s Hubbl devices.

Optus Sport was always destined to arrive on the Hubbl platform, confirmed as one of the supported apps prior to launch. However, it wasn’t one of the day-one apps, instead labelled as coming “soon after launch”. Roughly half a year down the track, the sports streaming app is now available.

The timing makes sense, considering the Premier League starts up again on 17 August. Optus Sport also hosts a raft of other overseas soccer (or football, depending on your code allegiance) competitions, including the J-League, DFB-Pokal, and FA Cup.

If you want to take advantage of Hubbl’s stack and save promotion though, you’re out of luck. While you can stream Optus Sport natively via the Hubbl puck or TV, it’s not one of the eligible apps for a subscription bundle. At the time of writing, Netflix is the only non-Foxtel streaming service included in the stack and save apps.

Your cheapest way to subscribe to Optus Sport is via Optus SubHub, the telco’s own subscription management platform. It does require you to be an Optus postpaid customer, however. If you are a customer, the sports subscription service costs $9.99 per month, down from the regular monthly $24.99 pricing.

At launch, Hubbl showed promise in spite of some usability quirks. Foxtel has since supplied multiple updates to compete alongside the likes of Fetch TV and Apple TV.

An interesting footnote is that the update comes as News Corp is considering selling its Foxtel business. It’s not known what impact this would have on its streaming properties, including Hubbl, Kayo, and Binge, but there’s clearly a lot playing out behind the scenes.
