PSVR 2 PC adapter is out now in Australia at long last

PlayStation’s virtual reality headset is now infinitely more useful, with the launch of the PSVR 2 PC adapter.

One of the biggest barriers facing prospective buyers of Sony’s headset was cost. In addition to a PlayStation 5 console, you needed to shell out nearly $900 for the peripheral. That’s expensive by anyone’s estimations.

The PSVR 2 is a good virtual reality device, mainly hampered by a lack of software support. PlayStation came swinging out the gate with a slate of launch titles, including the platform-exclusive Horizon: Call of the Mountain. However, as was feared at launch, the cadence of PlayStation VR games slowed down.

This is why the availability of a PSVR 2 PC adapter is a big deal. Now, you can use PlayStation’s headset to play VR games on a PC via Steam. Acclaimed games like Half-Life: Alyx, among many others, are only available on PC. So, instead of needing different hardware entirely to play them, an adapter bridges the gap.

Of course, there’s a cost involved. In Australia, the PSVR 2 PC adapter runs $94.95. Then there’s also the question of compatibility. VR gaming needs relatively decent PC hardware, and the PlayStation headset requires a DisplayPort 1.4 connection.

Another quirk to look out for is Bluetooth connectivity. The PSVR 2 controllers rely on Bluetooth, but some have encountered connection issues in preparation for the PC adapter launch. PlayStation has a small list of compatible Bluetooth adapters which is worth checking before you dive in.

Otherwise, make sure you check the system requirements too. In addition to hardware, you’ll need to download a few apps to get started, namely the SteamVR and PlayStation VR App.

Mind you, not every well-regarded VR game is on PC. Asgard’s Wrath 2, for example, remains exclusive to Meta devices like the Quest 3. At the very least, you can now play more games using PlayStation’s hardware.
