Small enough to squeeze into a backpack, the satellite-based Starlink Mini internet kit has arrived in Australia.
As spotted by the eagle-eyed tech journo Trevor Long, the more portable Starlink model arrives down under following its overseas launch last month. The Starlink Mini comes with a built-in Wi-Fi 5 router, various cables and adapters, plus a kickstand so you can position it for the best signal.
You do pay a premium for the portable privilege, however. A standard Starlink kit sets you back $599 for the hardware, whereas the Mini attracts a $799 price tag. That’s also before you factor in the cost of the internet plans.
As outlined in our review of the standard Starlink kit, there are multiple tiers available. For example, a standard residential plan costs $139 per month – or $125 if you sign up through Telstra. That gets you download speeds of up to 270Mbps, according to the plan’s critical info summary, and unlimited data.
For a Starlink Mini in Australia, the Roam (also known as Mobile) plan is the most relevant, due to its ability to be used anywhere. At $174 per month, it’s certainly not cheap. Fortunately, if your data needs are modest, the Mini Roam plan costs $80 a month in exchange for a 50GB allocation.
The Mini Roam plan also affords a bit more flexibility as to how you can use it. Sifting through the fine print, there’s a disclaimer highlighting that you can “use [the Starlink Mini] in-motion beyond 10mph”.
The availability of the Starlink Mini in Australia must be fresh, considering there isn’t even a mention of the Mini Roam plan on the critical information summaries page.
