Gamescom continued its tradition of hosting various video game-related announcements overnight, this time coming from Xbox. Several new model variants of its Xbox consoles are arriving soon, including a digital version of the Series X.
Previously, Microsoft’s gaming arm segmented its dedicated hardware into two distinct categories; the digital Xbox Series S, and the disc drive-equipped Series X. Now, the more powerful Xbox Series X console will feature a version without the disc drive for $100 less.
Like Sony’s approach to its PlayStation 5 hardware, the digital versus physical media divide reflects changing consumer habits. According to data from the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association, Australians continue to spend far more money on mobile and digital games than at traditional retail. In other words, the reliance on disc drives is diminishing.
Alongside the upcoming Xbox Series X digital console, the 1TB version of the Series S console will soon be available in white. Originally, the digital-only platform came in a white 512GB model, before a black 1TB model arrived last year.
These days, 1TB doesn’t go too far, especially if you regularly play the latest releases. Big game installs often take up more than 100GB apiece, to give you an indication. Xbox’s response is to launch a special edition 2TB Series X console in a subtly snazzy Galaxy Black finish.
It’ll set you back $200 more than a full-priced 1TB version (disc drive included), which is roughly the same or slightly less than buying additional storage separately.
Xbox Series X digital edition release date and price
In Australia, the new Xbox models arrive on 15 October, priced as follows:
- Xbox Series S – 1TB: $549
- Xbox Series X digital edition – 1TB: $699.99
- Xbox Series X – 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition: $999
Consoles only represent one part of Xbox’s business, though. The company recently partnered with Amazon to add an Xbox streaming app to Fire TV devices, following its inclusion on Samsung TVs. It means you don’t even need to own a console to play many of the brand’s games.
Microsoft’s gaming brand also announced several additions to its accessibility hardware range. Alongside the existing Xbox Adaptive Controller, designed to help gamers with accessibility needs, there will soon be the Xbox Adaptive Joystick, which can be used alongside other control inputs.
Other accessibility controllers revealed include the Proteus Controller and the Lite SE 2.4G Wireless Controller. Both of which provide different types of inputs catering to those with limited mobility. Xbox also released 3D-printable files for various thumb-stick toppers, so you can modify your existing controllers.
