Intel Core Ultra 200V laptops support up to 20 hours of battery life

The battle of next-generation computer chips is underway, following the launch of the Intel Core Ultra 200V processors ahead of IFA 2024.

As Intel’s second generation of its Core Ultra-branded chips, the 200V series adopts the company’s Lunar Lake architecture to deliver better performance at lower power levels. In practice, this should mean more capable laptops that last longer before needing to recharge.

Intel Core Ultra 200V system-on-a-chips face off against the AMD Ryzen AI 300 processors, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X technology launched earlier in the year alongside Microsoft’s Copilot+ platform. Intel claims its latest laptop processors are up to 80% more powerful than the previous Meteor Lake chips, and support as much as 20 hours of laptop battery life.

Performance gains are just one side of the coin, though. Intel’s new chips support faster wireless speeds via Wi-Fi 7, multi-PC connectivity with Thunderbolt Share, and better graphical processing for smooth gaming. They also wield neural processing units (NPU) up to four times more powerful than Meteor Lake’s. This helps run low-powered tasks – like video background blur, noise isolation, and graphics upscaling – without taxing the battery too much.

Alongside the reveal, Microsoft announced that its Copilot+ PC features – previously exclusive to Snapdragon-powered devices – will come to supported Intel and AMD devices as a free update starting in November. Notably, Recall, the controversial activity-tracking feature delayed due to security concerns, is coming to its software testing community in October.

Laptops equipped with the more powerful Intel Core Ultra 200V processors start arriving later in September. Several major manufacturers are already on board, including the likes of Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, and MSI. Expect to see these new laptops arriving on Australian shelves soon.
