Apple’s MacBook Pro gets the M4 treatment: Why is it a big deal?

Rounding out its week of Mac announcements, Apple has revealed the 2024 MacBook Pro range, along with the new high-end M4 Max chip.

It joins the new iMac and Mac Mini as part of the brand’s revamped computer lineup. Based on previous releases, there’s no ifs or buts about it: the MacBook Pro is a beast of a laptop. It’s the sort of laptop you get for complex video and visual effects editing, and any sort of task requiring powerful graphical rendering.

In Australia, the M4 MacBook Pro laptops start at $2,499 for the 14-inch model, while the 16-inch size starts at $3,299. If you want the top-of-the-range M4 Max chip, you’re looking at paying at least $4,999.

M4 MacBook Pro: What’s new?

Not much else has changed in terms of Apple’s premium laptop design. Computing power and performance are the main changes, accompanied by some slight tweaks here and there.

Like the M4 iMac, the new MacBook Pro gets an upgraded 12MP camera with the frame-correcting Centre Stage feature and Desk View. The base M4 model now comes with three Thunderbolt 4 ports, making it easier to connect multiple peripherals and external displays. On that latter point, this model supports three displays: two external monitors in addition to the laptop’s built-in display. Thunderbolt 5 comes to the M4 Pro and M4 Max models.

Again following in the iMac’s footsteps, you can get a MacBook Pro with an optional nano-texture display. It’s intended to block out glare and reflections, helping you see the screen more easily outdoors or near a sunny window.

Apple Intelligence also got a sizable mention from the MacBook Pro reveal. Apple’s foray into generative AI, these features include text summarisation and a more context-aware Siri assistant that Apple claims will help with productivity.

Available to pre-order now, the M4 range of MacBook Pro laptops arrives in Australia on 8 November 2024.
