Slimmer iPhone 17 “Air” heavily rumoured with big screen update

Apple is set to make a notable change to its iPhone range in 2025, with rumours suggesting a slim iPhone 17 “Air” will shake up the existing formula.

Reporting from MacRumors suggests that the rumoured iPhone 17 Air will replace the role currently filled by the iPhone 16 Plus. It follows earlier reporting from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, claiming that a slimmer iPhone model will accompany a new budget-conscious SE model in 2025.

Based on this, Apple is likely to retain its four-model release strategy come next September; the standard iPhone, two Pro models, and the alleged Air version. Pundits predict the “Air” label based on Apple’s historical naming convention for its thinner and lighter products. Devices like the MacBook Air and iPad Air have been mainstays of the brand for years now.

If the rumours turn out to be true, it’ll be the company’s first major iPhone form factor change since 2022. Instead of an updated smaller model after the iPhone 13 Mini, Apple launched the iPhone 14 Plus, offering a 6.7-inch alternative to the standard iPhone 14’s 6.1-inch display.

Based on the currently available information floating around, the proposed iPhone 17 Air will likely have a single rear camera and a 6.6-inch display. Notably, rumours suggest the display will use LTPO display technology, potentially paving the way for a 120Hz refresh rate.

Apple currently reserves its high-refresh-rate ProMotion technology for the more expensive iPhone Pro range, limiting the base models to 60Hz. It’s a puzzling move, considering many of the best phones, including much cheaper handsets, support 120Hz refresh rates.

Even though the iPhone 16 only launched recently, the iPhone 17 rumour mill is already in full swing. We’ll keep an eye out for any updates.
