Take my wallet: Steam Deck’s Australian launch is two weeks away

It’s been a long wait, but the Steam Deck now has an official release date in Australia.

Following Valve’s official announcement during PAX Aus 2024, the mega games company announced that local orders for its popular handheld gaming PC begin on 19 November 2024 at 10:00 AM AEDT, as reported by GamesHub.

That’s when you can order a Steam Deck directly through Valve, instead of paying marked-up prices from third-party sellers. The cheapest model starts at $649, making it a much more affordable alternative to competing devices like the Asus ROG Ally or the Lenovo Legion Go.

It’s not quite as powerful as other gaming handhelds, but the affordability is enticing. Reviews from overseas publications and some local outlets praised the Steam Deck for its design, battery life, and smooth SteamOS integration.

Australia gets the same three variants as overseas markets, starting with the entry-level LCD model. It comes with a seven-inch 1,280 x 800 display at 60Hz, Wi-Fi 5 connectivity, a 40Whr battery, and 256GB of built-in storage.

Then you’ve got two OLED Steam Decks, a 512GB versus a 1TB model, both of which feature similar spec sheets. Each OLED model has a slightly larger 7.4-inch screen, albeit limited to the same resolution but with a smoother 90Hz refresh rate. Internally, they get faster Wi-Fi 6E technology and a larger 50Whr battery.

Separating the OLED models is an anti-glare coating exclusive to the 1TB version. This top-of-the-line Steam Deck also comes with several digital goodies to spruce up your Steam profile.

Steam Deck release date and price in Australia

When Steam Deck orders open in Australia on 19 November 2024, here’s how much each model costs:

  • LCD 256GB: $649
  • OLED 512GB: $899
  • OLED 1TB: $1,049

Valve’s booth at PAX Aus this year was filled with locals keen to try out the hardware. Despite a lengthy delay between the overseas and Australian launches, the Steam Deck is sure to be popular.

It’s also very apt that the game featured on Valve’s promotional material is Hollow Knight, made by Adelaide’s own Team Cherry.
