Move over Wordle, my new daily game obsession is here

Want a fun new guessing game to add to your rotation? Real Bird Fake Bird, a quirky daily trivia game, is just the thing. As a lapsed Wordle player, I can see this new entry being the first thing I do in the morning.

Launched today by Studio Folly, the Australian team behind the charming word puzzler Gubbins, Real Bird Fake Bird is a browser game that challenges you to identify what’s real and what’s fake based on a series of prompts.

Every day revolves around a new category; today’s question asked “Are these real chili peppers?” One by one, you decide which of the seven provided answers are real, and which are entirely made up.

Clever in its simple design, Real Bird Fake Bird encourages you to share your daily score to compare how well you did compared to your friends. It taps into that same social element Wordle captured, where it’s just as much about discussing answers with other people as it is about doing daily puzzles.

According to the game’s website, it began as a bird-guessing game before branching into other topics. Each day is assigned a different subject; Wednesdays are food-related, while Monday’s puzzles are for arts, and so on. You can even submit your own puzzles for consideration.

Studio Folly’s signature charm forms a strong hook too. Sharing your daily scores comes with a cute little illustration ready-made for lighting up social media feeds. Development on the game took just a month, according to Studio Folly’s Jessica Shipard, compared to the three years spent making Gubbins.

I got 5/7 on my first attempt; how’d you go?
