Dell gets rid of annoying feature with Plus laptop debut

It’s official: the Dell XPS range is officially dead. Rising from the ashes is the newly named series of PCs that sound very familiar to Apple’s naming conventions. The first of these new laptops, the Dell Plus range, has just arrived in Australia to usher in a new era.

In case you missed it, Dell confirmed at CES 2025 that it was refreshing the names of its most popular devices. Long-standing sub-brands like XPS, Precision, and Latitude were dropped in favour of three main banners: Dell, Dell Pro, and Dell Pro Max. Executives likely looked at Apple’s simplified Pro and Pro Max MacBook range and wanted to get in on the action.

Slightly complicating matters is that each of Dell’s main pillars contains several sub-categories. One of them is the ‘Plus’ series, which represents the mid-range model of any given overarching device category. So, if you choose a Dell Pro, you can then choose from the Base, Plus, or Premium spec. Still with me?

Australia starts with three new mid-range Plus laptops from the base Dell range: a 14 and 16-inch clamshell, and a two-in-one hybrid. Each laptop comes with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 288V processor, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of SSD storage.

All three models come with a decent range of ports, including HDMI, USB-A, USB-C, and Thunderbolt 4. If you choose the 16-inch size, you also have the option of a Mini LED display. According to Dell, the battery life of its new laptops lasts up to 39% longer than its previous Inspiron PCs.

All of that is nice, but there’s one design change I’m most pleased about. There are no more capacitive function keys! The touch-based function row on last year’s Dell XPS 14 drove me nuts; physical buttons reign supreme.

As for the price, it varies depending on the specs. In Australia, Dell’s website lists the Plus laptops as starting at $2,478.
