Improving on its phone gimbal series, DJI has launched the Osmo Mobile 7P and Osmo Mobile 7 in Australia, adding more tracking features and the ability to charge your phone.
It’s an old adage but an evergreen one: the best camera is the one you have on you. For most of us, that happens to be a phone camera. DJI’s Osmo Mobile devices are designed to transform phones into pseudo-Steadicams, capable of tracking movement across various axes while minimising shaky footage.
Succeeding 2022’s Osmo Mobile 6, DJI’s new phone hybrid gimbal slash selfie stick has a few new tricks to show off. The ‘7’ is the cheaper model, priced at $159 and is the lightest of the series at 300 grams. To bring the weight down, it sacrifices the extendable rod seen in the 6 and 7P models.
Then there’s the $219 DJI Osmo Mobile 7P, which boosts the performance of its three-axis stabiliser. It also comes with the new ‘Multifunctional Module’, letting you use DJI’s subject-tracking technology in other apps that use your phone’s camera, instead of relying on the DJI Mimo app.
DJI does provide an incentive to use its app, however, in the form of ActiveTrack 7.0. It’s what the company calls its latest tracking tech, which can follow subjects through crowds or multiple people at the same time.
Both the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P and 7 benefit from a larger battery capacity, running for up to 10 hours. You can also plug in your phone to get a quick charge, which is new to the 7 series.
Available to order now from DJI’s website in Australia, the Osmo Mobile 7P costs $219, while the Osmo Mobile 7 costs $159.
Having used the Osmo Mobile 6, I like the idea of a phone gimbal that supports tracking via the native camera app. Stop making me download a separate app for everything!
