iPhone 16e has most of Apple’s big features for less than $1,000

Apple has revealed its lower-priced handset overnight, the iPhone 16e, which takes the place of the company’s previous budget SE series.

Priced at $999 in Australia for the 128GB model, the iPhone 16e shares a lot of features with the standard iPhone 16 range. It has a slightly lower spec A18 chip (with four GPU cores instead of five), granting it Apple Intelligence functionality, a 6.1-inch display, and a programmable Action button.

On the back is a 48MP ‘Fusion’ camera that can take wide shots and punch in with a 2x optical zoom. Apple’s Camera Control button introduced with the iPhone 16 is nowhere to be seen on the 16e, leaving a solitary power button on the right-hand side,

Notably, the new phone sports Apple’s first in-house cellular modem, which is called the ‘Apple C1’. According to Apple, it’s “the most power-efficient modem” used by an iPhone. This is reflected in the advertised battery life, claiming up to 26 hours of video playback compared to the standard iPhone 16’s 22 hours.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e begin on Friday 22 February, with devices arriving in Australia the following week on 28 February. Available in black and white colours, the phone has three storage configurations priced as follows:

  • 128GB: $999
  • 256GB: $1,199
  • 512GB: $1,599

It’s a bit pricier than the 2022 iPhone SE which was priced at $719 for a 64GB model. But it’s $400 cheaper than a base iPhone 16 model, making the 16e an attractive alternative.
