Only months after the iPhone 16 graced our shores has the attention turned to Apple’s next major device: the iPhone 17.
Speculation and rumours had already turned to the iPhone 17 even before its predecessor’s launch. Talks of a slimmer “Air” model point towards this year’s launch as being one of Apple’s more substantial in recent years.
Strap yourselves in for months of anticipation as we count down towards Apple’s biggest product launch of 2025. Check back regularly to get all the latest iPhone 17 news, including the likely release date and price in Australia.

Latest news, rumours and leaks
31 January 2025: iPhone sales were down despite Apple’s record quarter
Between October and December 2024, iPhone sales were slightly down compared to the same time in 2023. Apple’s quarterly financial report showed iPhone revenue reached US$69.1 billion, lower year-on-year than US$69.7 billion.
Apple CEO Tim Cook wasn’t worried, proclaiming the company’s “best quarter ever” to the tune of US$124.3 billion in total revenue. Cook also pointed to “a higher level of upgraders” and a record iPhone install base as reasons to be optimistic.
29 January 2025: iPhone SE 4 design reportedly leaked in new video
Separate from the iPhone 17 range, Apple is working on a refreshed version of its entry-level phone. Its current third-gen iPhone SE has held strong since 2022, but an update isn’t far away.
A new video shared online by a prominent leaker shows what appears to be a factory mockup of the iPhone SE 4. Based on the vision, it looks like Apple’s yet-to-be-confirmed budget handset will get rid of the physical home button in favour of a full-sized touchscreen. While it doesn’t appear to have the Camera Control button of the iPhone 16, it seems to have a programmable Action Button.
All the reporting so far points to a March or April launch window, leaving plenty of breathing room for the iPhone 17.
12 December 2024: Is Apple co-opting Google’s ski goggle look?
Apple might be shaking up the rear camera design this year if alleged images of the iPhone 17 frame are to be believed. In conjunction with reports about the phone’s design changes, there’s mounting speculation that the Pro models will get an elongated rectangular camera strip instead of the existing square-like setup. However, other reports suggest more subtle changes are afoot.
It’s led to comparisons with the Google Pixel 9 range, which introduced a more prominent rear camera design likened to ski goggles. Maybe it’ll mean no more awkward gaps when resting your phone on a table.
25 November 2024: Aluminium is back in vogue
Remember when Apple made a big show about the titanium material in the iPhone 15 Pro range? It could be a short-lived fling, according to reports about the iPhone 17’s design.
Multiple sources suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will trade the titanium frames of its predecessors for an aluminium build instead. Although it’s unlikely to make a material (heh) difference for end users, it’s intriguing considering how much of Apple’s advertising revolved around titanium only less than two years ago.
8 November 2024: iPhone 17 Air rumours begin swirling
After persisting with the ‘Plus’ model without seeing much in the way of commercial success, Apple is changing tack. Multiple sources reported that the iPhone 17 Air will join the line-up in 2025, adopting a slimmer form factor.
It’s suggested that the rumoured Air will have a 6.6-inch display potentially with a 120Hz refresh rate. Currently, only the Pro and Pro Max models support smoother motion, with the base-level iPhones limited to 60Hz.
27 October 2024: All iPhone 17 models likely to use LTPO displays
Apple’s staunch commitment to 60Hz screens on its core iPhones might be coming to an end. A report by the Korean publication ETNews claimed that all four iPhone 17 models will have LTPO displays.
Already used on the Pro and Pro Max phones, LTPO technology is more power efficient and enables greater control over refresh rates. This means it’s highly likely the entire iPhone 17 range will support Apple’s 120Hz “ProMotion” technology.
iPhone 17 release date and price in Australia
Like clockwork, Apple holds an event every September to reveal the latest iPhone. While it’s too far out to pin down a precise date, we can use last year’s launch cycle to provide a rough window.
For the iPhone 16, Apple hosted its launch event on 10 September 2024 Australian time. The phones were then released a week and a half later on 20 September. Using that as an estimate, expect a mid-September release date for the iPhone 17.
As for the price, Apple made the rare move in lowering the iPhone 16’s price tag. It launched as much as $100 cheaper than the iPhone 15 after years of gradual price increases in Australia.
Apple won’t confirm iPhone 17 prices until its official announcement. In the meantime, you can use the iPhone 16 range as an indication:
