Graphics cards are one of the most expensive components of any PC build, but this is next level. The new Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 series GPUs cost upwards of $5,000 in Australia, led by the flagship 5090 model.
Not even the eye-watering prices could prevent Nvidia’s next-gen GPUs from selling out immediately. PC retailer Mwave issued a statement on its website about the stock shortage, while PC Case Gear posted on social media about limited availability.
Browsing both retailers shows a range of out-of-stock models from the likes of Asus and Gigabyte. The RTX 5090 attracts a price tag as high as $5,699, with the RTX 5080 reaching $2,799. It makes the several hundred dollars I spent on the entry-level GTX 1060 way back when look like chump change.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 price in Australia
Based on what’s mentioned on Nvidia’s website, Australia’s local pricing “starts” at $2,019 for the RTX 5080 and $4,039 for the 5090 card. However, the fancier third-party models take the recommended retail price and run with it.

For comparison, the overseas pricing is US$999 for the RTX 5080 and US$1,999 for the RTX 5090, albeit for the cheaper ‘Founders Edition’ launch models. Even factoring in the weak Australian dollar, we’re left paying substantially more for the cheapest third-party models.
Predictably, scalpers are taking advantage of the supply shortage, listing inflated prices on eBay. In response, some crafty folks are creating fake eBay listings, selling pictures of the latest GPUs to try and catch out bots.
DLSS 4 also launched alongside the RTX 5000 series; Nvidia claims the latest version of the frame generation feature can produce up to 240 FPS at 4K with the RTX 5090 GPU. Previous-generation cards also benefit from the updated DLSS AI model, but the top-end features are naturally tied to the latest models.
