Samsung’s capable Galaxy A56 5G delivers AI punch for a low price

Samsung’s latest mid-tier A-Series smartphone range has just launched, with the range topping Galaxy A56 5G offering an impressive bang-for-buck technology package.

Called “Awesome Intelligence”, customers can now get their hands on what Samsung describes as “fan-favourite” AI features without stretching to the more expensive Galaxy S range of phones.

“The new Galaxy A series marks an important step in our mission of AI for all, by opening Galaxy’s incredible mobile AI experiences to even more people around the world,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics.

Now with (some) AI

AI features found in the Galaxy A56 include Google’s Circle to Search, which can scan your phone’s screen and provide useful information about it. This could be a landmark piece of clothing, type of food, or just about anything.

New in this version is a faster and more contextual search, which can recognise phone numbers, emails, URLs, and music playing nearby. It can even identify a song that you hum or sing.

Other AI features include Best Face, which helps you get the perfect group shot by detecting people’s faces and enabling you to replace them with better versions. This is super-handy when people are blinking or pulling a funny face.

Photo editing is now boosted by Object Eraser, which uses generative AI to seamlessly remove objects and paint realistic backgrounds into spaces around your images.

Like the Galaxy S-series, the A56 5G’s AI features can be found via the AI Select tool, which suggests the best AI features for the job at hand. This can be accessed from a slide-in menu from just about any screen.

Processing punch

Powering the A56’s AI features is the Exynos 1580 chipset, along with a larger vapour chamber inside to keep cooler during long gaming sessions and minimise thermal throttling.

Photos will also look better with the Galaxy A56 5G’s extra processing punch, and we can expect to see improved night photos, along with plenty of creation options thanks to the triple camera system.

Camera capabilities

There’s a 50MP main lens, 12MP ultra-wide lens, and 5MP macro camera. The front-facing camera now has 10-bit HDR support for capturing more lifelike images. The A56 also sees improvements to low-light photography on both the selfie camera as well as the 12MP ultra-wide camera.

The A56 5G gets a new design, while not drastically different, the rear camera module has a “floating” design, along with new colour choices including Awesome Olive and Awesome Black. Both colours have shiny stainless steel edges, and we at the GadgetGuy team are quite taken with the Olive model we have in the office.

On the battery front, there’s a large 5000mAh version included, along with support for 45W Super Fast 2.0 charging technology. This can completely charge the battery in 1 hour and 8 minutes, or 50% in less than 30 minutes. You’ll need to bring your own 45W charger, however, as one is not included in the box.

Larger display

Samsung has slightly increased the screen size to 6.7 inches. This is a 120 Hz, full-HD Super AMOLED type, with brightness reaching up to 1200 nits for when outside, but it will otherwise operate at 800 nits.

Long-term view

A56 5G users will get peace of mind thanks to six generations of Android OS and One UI updates, along with six years of security updates.

It should also be able to roll with the punches, so to speak, thanks to IP67 water and dust resistance, as well as a durable Corning Glass Victus on the front and back cover to help prevent cracking and scratches.

Lastly, thanks to its updates, One UI 7 interface, this gets a more holistic Knox Vault security layer to protect your private data, along with Auto Blocker, Theft Protection, and more security settings.

An A56 for business

Samsung says that it will also launch a Galaxy A56 5G Enterprise Edition, which is intended to provide business-ready mobile features to enterprises of any size.

“Enterprise customers benefit from seven years of security and One UI updates, three years of warranty, and a two-year product lifecycle guarantee to ensure long-lasting and worry-free adoption.”

“It also includes a one-year license to the Knox Suite – Enterprise Plan, the ultimate package to protect and manage extensive and complex device fleets through granular OS update control, device usage analytics, intelligent security insights, and exclusive features tailor-made for frontline workers.”

Galaxy A56 5G prices and availability

In terms of costs and configurations, there’s no removable MicroSD card on the A56 5G; however, you can purchase the 128GB model for $699, or the 256GB version for $799.

The Galaxy A56 5G is joined by the Galaxy A36 5G and A26 5G, which are available for $549 and $499, respectively.

Pre-orders are now open, with models appearing in shops on the 27th of March.
