Garmin has released the Vivoactive 6 smartwatch in Australia, adding a big focus on sleep health.
The $549 wearable comes in a bit under the Series 10 Apple Watch, and is billed as more of an everyman’s smartwatch compared to the pro-level Garmin Enduro 3 and Fenix 8.
From a hardware perspective, the Garmin Vivoactive 6 is very similar to the previous Vivoactive 5 model. Both sport a 1.2-inch AMOLED colour display, up to 11 hours of battery life, and many of the standard health-tracking sensors you’d expect from a smartwatch.
Software is where the Vivoactive 6 starts to distance itself from Garmin’s predecessor. New to this iteration is what’s called a “smart wake alarm”. As explained in Garmin’s press release, the feature gently wakes you up by vibrating during a lighter stage of sleep.
It’s an attempt to avoid waking up at a rigid time while you’re in a deep sleep cycle, which experts don’t recommend. Instead, the watch uses a window of time and attempts to wake you during a light sleep cycle and, hopefully, make you feel less groggy.
There are also more sports apps this time around to help track different workouts. Garmin advertises more than 80 types, ranging from HIIT to swimming, and even pickleball. For comparison, the Vivoactive 5 had around 30 sports apps to choose from.
One of Garmin’s big-ticket features is Body Battery, which provides advice about your energy levels. It’s designed to guide when to push yourself versus resting up based on your daily activities. The Vivoactive 6 also supports contactless payments and connectivity between iPhone and Android devices.
Available to order online now, the Vivoactive 6 comes in a 42mm size and colour choices including Black/Slate, Bone/Lunar Gold, Jasper Green, and Pink Dawn.
