Apple’s yearly WWDC event is only a week away but everyone should temper their expectations. Regular Apple reporter Mark Gurman for Bloomberg teased a bit of what to expect at the tech giant’s developer conference. From what he’s saying, don’t get your hopes up too much.
Some of the widely tipped announcements include a new gaming hub and renaming this year’s software updates to reference “26”. But as far as revelatory features and AI technologies, Apple won’t make much of a splash. Gurman’s reporting suggests that the AI announcements will be relatively lightweight.
After launching Apple Intelligence last year, Apple struggled to excite users with its AI features. It even had to pause some AI functionality after a series of high-profile mistakes. At WWDC, Apple is expected to let developers take advantage of its on-device large language models (LLMs) to create AI-powered apps.
Behind the scenes, Apple is reportedly working on a few different major AI-based projects. One is a version of Siri powered by an LLM to make it more conversational, like Google’s Gemini Live, which is already on iPhones.
Another AI development in the works is an AI model comprised of “150 billion parameters”. This is a more complex AI model from Apple that reportedly relies on cloud technology to drive more advanced processing, akin to models from Google and OpenAI. That’s not expected to feature at WWDC, though, with plenty more work to follow before it gets a public release.
Aside from AI, Gurman claims that the next macOS instalment is called “Tahoe”. Every major Mac software upgrade takes its name from a major Californian location; last year’s was “Sequoia“, named after the state’s national park. Meanwhile, Tahoe comes from Lake Tahoe, which sits between California and Nevada.
While the name of a Mac software upgrade might not be as consequential as Apple’s AI plans, it’s no less interesting. Even if WWDC looks to be a quiet one this year.
