Netflix isn’t the only streaming service Australians have to pay more for: Apple TV+ just got a price increase, too.
Apple’s premium streaming service now costs $15.99 per month in Australia, $3 more than the previous monthly $12.99 cost. For now, Apple TV+ only offers one tier, unlike most streamers that charge varying amounts for different video resolutions. Everyone can stream Apple’s content in 4K, provided they have the internet bandwidth and a compatible display.
While $15.99 doesn’t sound as steep as Netflix’s $28.99 4K Premium plan, there’s a fair gap in the volume of content. Not that I’m conflating quantity with quality, but Netflix does stream a wider variety of movies and TV shows. Ars Technica reported Apple TV+ as having fewer than 300 movies and shows last year, while Netflix hosted more than 18,000.
A lot of Apple TV+ content is very good, it must be noted. Ted Lasso, Severance, and Shrinking are all great, while the Murderbot adaptation was well-received.
If anything, the Apple TV+ price increase might be a ploy to shuffle the company’s subscription base. Apple One — the subscription that bundles iCloud+, TV+, Music, and Arcade — still costs $24.95 per month on an individual plan. For the family tier, which lets you share subscriptions with up to five people, Apple One costs $31.95 per month.
For comparison, Disney+ lifted its 4K tier to $20.99 per month in February, and sports fans started shelling out $40 per month to watch Kayo in 4K. No one likes price increases, but it’s become an increasingly common reality as companies look to subscriptions for a reliable revenue source.
