Aussie Broadband to sell budget Buddy Telco brand for $8m

Aussie Broadband is selling Buddy Telco, its budget internet brand, to Tangerine as part of a broader wholesale deal to take on more than 250,000 connections.

Aussie announced the sale alongside its 2025 financial year results, where it also confirmed an 18.7 per cent revenue increase year-on-year. Adding to the flurry of activity, Aussie Broadband signed a six-year deal with More Telecom to provide wholesale internet to More and Tangerine, both of which are partly owned by CommBank.

Current Buddy Telco customers don’t need to take any action; Aussie Broadband expects to complete the sale, approximately valued at $8 million, by the second half of the 2026 financial year.

A year after launching Buddy Telco with plans to reach 100,000 customers within three years, Aussie’s budget telco racked up 14,000 customers. Aussie Broadband’s press release described Buddy as “valuable” as a “testing ground for several enhancements to [Aussie Broadband’s] digital capabilities”.

Notably, Buddy Telco is an online-only self-service telco. Instead of contacting customer service to set everything up, customers can manage everything via an app.

Once the sale concludes, the Buddy Telco brand and its customers will transition to Tangerine. Because of the wholesale arrangement, Tangerine’s internet connections will be on the Aussie Broadband network.

Aussie Broadband previously attempted to buy rival telco Superloop in February 2024. Its offer was rejected, followed by Superloop signing a wholesale agreement with energy provider Origin, a contract previously held by Aussie Broadband.

At the time of writing, CommBank sells More NBN plans at a discount to its banking customers.

The timing of the sale and the wholesale agreement means that the NBN’s speed upgrade will already be in place by the time everything is finalised. Tangerine is already selling faster plans before the official September start date, offering one of the cheapest NBN 500 deals.
