As expected, Hollow Knight: Silksong did not feature during Nintendo’s Indie World showcase overnight. But that’s okay, because what was shown was an eclectic and diverse collection of games I immediately want to play.
As much as I enjoyed Nintendo’s third-party developer showcase in July, it was a bit one-note. There were a lot of similar-looking JRPGs that catered to a specific audience. An audience I count myself part of, but a niche subset nevertheless.
Enter last night’s Nintendo Indie World, a presentation packed with the sort of variety smaller developers specialise in. Often, the bigger the studio and the more money involved, the more risk-averse games become. Indie games are the antidote to the exhaustion caused by trend-chasing projects, like the countless live service games that demand your constant attention.
Big Nintendo Indie World announcements
First up was a new look at Mina the Hollower, the Game Boy Colour-inspired game from the developers behind Shovel Knight. Yacht Club Games has been fairly quiet on the project since announcing it in 2022, so it’s great to see a 31 October release date. Mina the Hollower looks like a terrific throwback to the Zelda games of old.
Of the games available now, I love the concept of Tiny Bookshop, and Is This Seat Taken? instantly sold me on its cute logic puzzles. Nintendo’s decision to bury UFO 50 as part of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it sizzle reel at the end was bizarre; its 50-games-in-one package is far better than any compilation has any right to be.
It was impossible to watch Indie World without adding nearly every game to my wishlist. Popular indie PC games are also getting new life on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with Content Warning and Caves of Qud among those on the horizon.
Ball X Pit is shaping up to be my next obsession when it launches on 15 October. Combining classic brick-breaking puzzle action with base building, I think its approach to progression and customisation will hook me like Loop Hero and Cult of the Lamb. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Devolver Digital also published those games.
I could easily wax lyrical for longer, but my main point is this: what Nintendo crammed into a brisk 15-minute Indie World presentation was far more interesting than what we’ve seen from many major companies in recent months.
