Micro RGB is Samsung’s tiny new TV tech: What is it?

LED, OLED, Mini LED: you’d be forgiven for thinking there are too many different types of TV technology to keep up with. But if there’s one constant in consumer tech, it’s change. Case in point, Samsung announced its new in-house Micro RGB technology at IFA, designed to produce more colour and contrast than existing TVs.

True to its name, Samsung’s new technology combines red, green, and blue RGB LEDs that measure less than 100 micrometres. For a reference point, a micrometre is one thousandth of a millimetre.

If a Mini LED backlight is roughly the size of a small grain of rice, Samsung’s Micro RGB LEDs are somewhere around the size of a dust particle. It’s tiny.

Samsung then arranges these tiny LEDs behind a TV panel, patterned to produce colourful images. And because the LEDs are so small, it should allow granular light control with minimal blooming or light bleed.

Unsurprisingly, AI plays a part in how Micro RGB works. Samsung explained that a specific AI engine analyses each frame, optimising the picture to make it “more lifelike and immersive”. Using AI, a feature called “Micro RGB Colour Booster Pro” aims to turn content with “dull colour tones” into a “more vivid” result.

So, what does that mean for creative intent? Earlier in the week, Dolby claimed that its updated HDR standard will make adjustments “without compromising artistic intent”. Samsung’s TVs famously haven’t supported Dolby Vision so far, so it will be interesting to see how Micro RGB processes images while keeping the original vision intact.

At IFA, Samsung demonstrated the new technology via a 115-inch screen, which will come to Australia sometime in the next few months. Being a brand-new technology, don’t expect it to come cheap.
