Wi-Fi 8 might be a while away yet, but TP-Link says it has run its first successful test of the upcoming networking technology. Also known as IEEE 802.11bn, Wi-Fi 8 is currently in development, aiming to improve the reliability of wireless devices.
TP-Link’s announcement doesn’t elaborate too much on the successful Wi-Fi 8 test, other than confirming it transmitted data using a prototype device “through a joint industry partnership”. According to the networking brand, it’s “a major step” towards the next-gen Wi-Fi tech.
Based on the latest information from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Wi-Fi 8 will likely receive approval in the first half of 2028.
In the meantime, Wi-Fi 7, which gained certification at the start of 2024, is building more support. Some of Wi-Fi 7’s biggest contributions so far have been wider 6GHz channels, allowing faster data transfers, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets compatible devices use multiple network bands simultaneously.
Wi-Fi 8, on the other hand, doesn’t appear to be chasing raw speeds. Instead, it comes with the label of “Ultra High Reliability”, signalling an intent to improve real-world performance. TP-Link already has a webpage live explaining what Wi-Fi 8 sets out to achieve.
According to TP-Link, Wi-Fi 8 implements a few new technologies, like Distributed tone Resource Units (DRU), Multi AP Coordination, and Enhanced Long Range, all of which handle how the signal reaches connected devices. Without getting too stuck in the details, a lot of the in-development technology helps reach devices from further away, while adjusting signals to avoid overlaps and interference.
All of this remains theoretical until Wi-Fi 8 is approved and certified for consumer use. By then, the hope is that higher-resolution video and mixed-reality technologies will be more common to take advantage of the reduced wireless latency Wi-Fi 8 promises to bring.
