Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity have become increasingly important factors for potential car buyers. But if you’re not in the market for a new car, and don’t have either of the phone-connecting technologies, there are some reasonably priced options. Another option recently launched in Australia, the Uniden iGO Play 10+, a mountable touchscreen that’s compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The $249 10.26-inch adapter acts as a car’s infotainment hub that connects to a range of iPhones and Android handsets. It supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, plus an aux cable to plug into a car’s speaker system.
Its appeal lies in the ability to legally and safely access a phone’s apps while driving. Hands-free calls, music and podcast streaming, and navigating maps are all supported by the iGO Play 10+, which also features voice controls.
An alternative to adapters from Laser and Amazon’s Echo Auto, Uniden’s newest device also doesn’t require professional installation. Unlike replacing a car’s infotainment system entirely, there’s no need to fiddle with electrical wiring. Instead, it just powers on using the included car charger.
McKinsey research from a couple of years ago found that nearly half of car buyers wouldn’t buy a car without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It wouldn’t be surprising if that proportion has since increased.
For those of us with older cars, adapters like Uniden’s iGO Play 10+ seem like a good stopgap. It’s out now in Australia across retailers and Uniden’s website.
