Australia one of the first to get Asus’ speedy Wi-Fi 8 gaming router

Wi-Fi 8 is yet to be officially certified, but that hasn’t stopped major networking brands from getting on top of what promises to be another step up in wireless reliability. Asus is the latest to get in early with a Wi-Fi 8 router, announcing that it will launch the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 gaming router in Australia and New Zealand before most overseas countries.

Set to launch in early October, the quad-band router includes two 5GHz bands, in addition to one dedicated to 2.4GHz and another for the fastest 6GHz band. Across all four bands, the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 supports up to 25,000Mbps of throughput. Not that any Australian internet plan will get close to that, but it’s a lot of room for future-proofing.

Adding to the router’s high-speed wireless connectivity are plenty of ports for wired connections. Two 10Gbps and four 2.5Gbps ports are included, with one dedicated to a gaming device, prioritising traffic ahead of other sources.

What distinguishes the Rapture GT-BN98 from previous-gen routers is its Wi-Fi 8 technology. Wi-Fi 7, which was officially certified in 2024, introduced wider channels — among other technologies — enabling higher peak speeds. Conversely, proponents of Wi-Fi 8 claim that its biggest benefit will be overall improvements to reliability and stability.

According to Asus, Wi-Fi 8 routers, including the Rapture GT-BN98, sustain stronger connections with smart home devices, navigate competing network signals more effectively, and supply better connections the further you move away from the access point.

Aimed at the premium end of the market, the Rapture GT-BN98 will cost $1,999 when it launches in Australia next month. Next year, Asus will launch its ZenWiFi BN12 Wi-Fi 8 mesh system. Scheduled to arrive in early 2027, Asus claims the BN12 is suited to larger homes, capable of reaching up to 7,000 square feet (about 650 square metres) through walls and other obstructions.
