Following just a brief glimpse earlier in the year, Nintendo showed an extended look at the Ocarina of Time remake, confirming a 5 November release date.
As part of a 30-minute presentation overnight dedicated to The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary, Nintendo shared more details about the remade classic. A completely new aesthetic caught the attention of many familiar with the original Nintendo 64 game. Gone are the jagged polygonal edges synonymous with 90s gaming, replaced by smooth, highly detailed textures and porcelain-like faces.
Unencumbered by the N64 controller’s single analogue stick, the Nintendo Switch 2’s Ocarina of Time lets Link jump, sprint, and see a full 360-degree view of the high-res 3D environments. Demoed by Eiji Aonuma, series producer, the gameplay footage depicted entirely revamped versions of Kokiri Village and Hyrule Fields.
In what was perhaps the most charming addition was the added ability to use the Switch 2’s built-in microphone to play the game’s eponymous ocarina. Even if you don’t have an ocarina, you can play other real-life instruments or hum, and the tune will play in-game. In a classic Nintendo move, multiple versions of the iconic ocarina will be sold closer to the game’s launch.
Nintendo also used the presentation to announce its first special edition Switch 2 console. Designed to commemorate The Legend of Zelda series’ 40th anniversary, the forest green Joy-Con depict Triforce motifs, as does the dock, with a gold-coloured design taking up most of the front. Pre-orders are now live for the $799.95 console, which launches on 29 October.
Aussies will also get the chance to hear the Zelda series’ music played by a live orchestra next year. Tickets go on sale soon for several concerts across Melbourne and Sydney as the 40th anniversary celebrations continue into 2027.
