- Healthgrades has revealed its 2024 awards for America’s Best Hospitals.
- These facilities are among the top 1% of hospitals nationwide.
- Rankings were based on a review of almost 4,500 hospitals.
- Thirty of the most common conditions and procedures were considered.
- Experts say that Healthgrades is a great starting place when seeking quality care.
When you need healthcare, you want to know that you are getting it from the best doctors and hospitals that you can.
However, if you haven’t been to a hospital or know someone who has, it can be difficult to know whether it’s the best choice for you.
That’s where Healthgrades comes in.
On January 23, 2024, Healthgrades announced its 2024 America’s Best Hospitals Awards and State Rankings.
In a press release, Healthgrades stated that its rankings “recognize the national leaders in overall clinical excellence and the top-ranked hospitals for specialty care by state.”
They further noted that they use a clinically validated methodology to make their selections based entirely on patient outcomes.
In order to choose the top 250 hospitals, Healthgrades examined clinical performance data on around 4,500 hospitals for 30 common procedures and conditions.
They also measured these same facilities, looking at 18 key areas, including such specialties as Cardiac Care, Spine Surgery, and Pulmonary Care. This enabled them to determine the highest-ranking hospitals in 32 states.
Additionally, the hospitals received recognition as being in the top 1%, 2%, and 5% of hospitals nationwide with the following awards:
- America’s 50 Best Hospitals
- America’s 100 Best Hospitals
- America’s 250 Best Hospitals
How Healthgrades determined the top 50 hospitals in the US
Healthgrades explained that the top 50 hospitals were determined based on “consistent clinical excellence based on an analysis of risk-adjusted mortality and complications rates for common procedures and conditions.”
What this means is that these hospitals have been among America’s 250 Best Hospitals for several consecutive years.
To select the best 50 out of this pool of candidates, Healthgrades uses a three-step procedure:
- Take any hospitals that were in the top 250 in 2024 and count the number of consecutive years they have received this designation.
- Rank them according to how many years they have received this award, sorting them based on their volume-weighted z-score, a statistical measure of hospital quality outcomes.
- Determine which of the hospitals have been among the 250 best for at least seven years. Since more than 50 had achieved this record, they also used the most recent volume-weighted z-score to narrow it down to the top 50.
How Healthgrades’ hospital rankings can help patients
In the press release, Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades, said, “Hospital quality is a crucial, yet often overlooked, factor to consider when choosing a doctor. Healthgrades is dedicated to taking the guesswork out of the equation by providing consumers with a reliable, data-driven platform to identify reputable hospitals in their area.”
Katy Dubinsky, Pharm.D., a Pharmacist and CEO of Vitalize, said that she finds the Healthgrades hospital rankings “to be a great tool for patients.”
“These rankings are usually based on various factors, including patient outcomes, the quality of care, and specialized services offered by hospitals,” she explained. “This can guide patients to hospitals that have demonstrated excellence in specific areas of healthcare, ensuring they receive the best possible treatment for their needs.”
Dubinsky further noted that this sort of information can be crucial in finding the right healthcare professional, especially if you have a more specialized or complex medical condition.
Lauren Thayer, a registered nurse at HealthCanal, added that Healthgrades allows patients to review and compare hospitals and doctors across various criteria like specialties and regions.
“This information is useful for potential patients,” she said, “as it allows them to compare important facts and understand more about what the hospital has accomplished as far as clinical outcomes, patient safety, and patient experience at their facility.”
Thayer said that patients are generally seeking care for a specific reason, and having a way to compare facts and figures related to each hospital can help them find care that is the best fit for them and their particular needs.
“The Healthgrades list may help patients as a starting point,” she added. “For instance, if they are considering care at 3 different hospitals and only one of them ended up on the top 50 hospitals list, then they may eliminate the other two immediately.”
Thayer concluded by noting that, overall, choosing a hospital is a personal choice based on a variety of factors. “Healthgrades can offer a perspective and information that may help patients guide their choices to the best healthcare for them,” she said.
