New waterproof Motorola Edge 50 range gets 3x optical zoom

Australia’s mid-range phone market gets even more competitive this week following the launch of the Motorola Edge 50 and Edge 50 Neo handsets.

Unlike a lot of phones where you need to look closely to find the differences, these devices make it obvious from the outset. The Edge 50 is the bigger of the two, with its pOLED screen spanning 6.7 inches, while the Neo is a more portable 6.4 inches.

Both contain eSIM support, IP68 waterproof ratings, 68W TurboPower wired charging, and 15W wireless charging; all decent features for sub-$800 phones. Notably, they also include a 3x optical zoom telephoto lens, which is uncommon in the mid-range market. This camera joins the main 50MP Sony LYTIA 700C sensor that drives the phones’ photography array.

Other than size, the processor is the main difference between the Motorola Edge 50 and Edge 50 Neo. Moto’s petite Neo handset uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chip, compared to the standard Edge 50’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor. Each phone ships with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage, making the chip the sole internal differentiator.

In terms of where they sit within the Edge range, the latest duo is more powerful than the 2024 Fusion, and is just under the brand’s Pro model. Smaller handsets are few and far between these days, with the Edge 50 Neo Motorola’s first since its 2022 model.

Beyond the hardware, several Moto AI features also come to the new phones. For example, Style Sync generates on-device wallpapers and themes to match colour schemes and your outfit, while Magic Canvas provides text-to-image generation.

Motorola Edge 50 price and release date in Australia

Out today, the Motorola Edge 50 costs $799 exclusively through JB Hi-Fi and comes in three colours: Koala Grey, Jungle Green, and Peach Fuzz – the Pantone colour of the year, previously seen on the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra.

The Neo variant costs $699, launching on 12 September across JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Officeworks, Mobileciti, Amazon, and Motorola’s website. It comes in the fancy-sounding Poinciana, Lattè, and Grisaille Pantone colours.

Both phones look well-featured for the price, and the availability of a smaller handset is great for those who prefer compact devices.
