Motorola Razr 50 is a tribute to the classic flip, so why does it do this?

The Motorola Razr was an icon of the early 2000s, and was the hot flip-phone that you saw product-placed in every movie and TV show. Fast forward to 2024 and the Motorola Razr 50 is a folding smartphone with a 6.9″ pOLED display and, crucially, a full-functional external 3.6″ display.

In other words, it’s a flip phone you don’t need to flip open to use. At least, not all the time. Motorola says the external display is for when you want to make a quick Google Wallet payment, skip a track on Spotify, or check and respond to notifications.

The external display is also pOLED and is 2.4 times larger than the one on the Razr 40 (reviewed on GadgetGuy in 2023). It includes a widget panel so users can configure it for many of their own apps, including Google Photos, Google Maps (the display can give directions), and of course Gemini. Motorola also highlights the dedicated Spotify panel and a Bose panel for owners of the matching moto buds+ Bose earbuds.

Colourful family

Of course, the real draw of the Razr 50 is that classic flip-phone form factor and the big folding pOLED display inside. Even Motorola admits the phone is perfect for, as it says, “dramatic hang-ups” thanks to a revamped hinge design that’s flickier (for opening) and clickier (for snapping shut again). As for look and feel, the Razr 50 comes in a range of Pantone colours, such as Beach Sand, Spritz Orange, or Koala Grey, and has a vegan leather or suede finish.

The whole thing is IPX8-rated (that’s 1.5m underwater for 30 minutes) and has Corning Gorilla Glass Victus to protect that external display from drops and scratches.

Personalised and powerful

Powering all this, the Motorola Razr 50 uses the MediaTek Dimensity 7300X processor partnered with a MediaTek APU 655 chipset for a smoother visual experience and, yes, enhanced AI task efficiency (as Motorola puts it).

Motorola’s Hello UX version of Android has a bunch of enhancements around letting users personalise the display, including font, colours, and icons. And motor ai includes a swathe of features that let users embrace a unique style, including Style Sync and Magic Canvas for creating personalised wallpapers and themes.

Outside the phone again, and the camera system on the Motorola Razr 50 has a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation, a 13MP ultra-wide and macro lens, both of which are accessible from the external screen. Inside is a 32MP camera for selfies and video calls. The system also features Quad Pixel technology for better light sensitivity.

All of this is kept running all day by a 4200mAh battery that can be topped up over the wire by 30W TurboPower charging, and wirelessly at 15W too.

The Motorola Razr 50 is available now, exclusively at Optus stores for an RRP of $1199.
