With Australians finally getting their hands on Apple Intelligence, there are loads of improvements to enjoy including a smarter Siri. However, Apple hasn’t revealed all of its exciting updates for Siri, and more are set to arrive in a few months. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect.
Personal context
Siri will become more aware of your ongoing activities, preferences, and past interactions by using a personalised semantic index. This system organises information specific to you, such as frequently contacted people or familiar places, enabling more relevant and context-aware responses. For example, if you frequently message a family member about picking up groceries, Siri could proactively suggest sending them a reminder or even create a shopping list for you.
In-app actions
Siri is gaining deeper integration across apps, although current limitations mean it won’t yet take actions that span multiple applications. This feature aims to streamline workflows and improve efficiency. For instance, you might ask Siri to send a message referencing an upcoming event while it automatically pulls details from your calendar. Or, imagine dictating a note to Siri and having it seamlessly saved to a task manager app like Reminders. Once Siri can perform actions, the notion of a virtual personal assistant will really come into its own.
On-screen awareness
Siri will be able to interpret and interact with what’s on your screen. For example, you’ll be able to add an address to your contacts directly from an email or a webpage, showcasing context-sensitive functionality. It’s almost like someone looking over your shoulder at your screen, and understands what it means, only not as creepy.
Alongside these future updates, Siri has already received a major overhaul in the latest Apple software updates (iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2).
The refreshed design introduces a vibrant, colourful ring that appears around your screen when Siri is in use, and on Mac, Siri can now be placed anywhere on your desktop for added convenience. Interactions feel more natural, allowing you to speak as you would in normal conversation, including pauses or corrections—for instance, asking Siri to set an alarm and then changing it to a timer without starting over.
You can also type requests for moments when speaking isn’t ideal, and Siri can now guide you through learning how to use your devices, like explaining how to take a screen recording or share your Wi-Fi password. With these changes, Siri is evolving into a more helpful assistant. More information about the new features is available on Apple’s website.
