Keen to try the new Chat-GPT integration with Apple Intelligence? You’re out of luck; there’s a ChatGPT outage impacting users around the world, just as OpenAI launched its Sora video generation tool.
Just as Australia finally got Apple’s generative AI-powered features, a major component went out of action. According to OpenAI’s status page, its AI chatbot and Sora software have been down for the past hour.
Keen to try the ChatGPT integration on my iPhone, I received an error message but dismissed it as teething issues as part of iOS 18.2. As it turns out, the outage isn’t just for Apple; everyone’s impacted.
Designated a “major outage” by OpenAI, it looks like the ChatGPT outage relates to API issues. So, that’s why any app or software that fetches information from ChatGPT isn’t working right now.
“We have reports of API calls returning errors, and difficulties logging in to platform.openai.com and ChatGPT,” a statement on the OpenAI status page said. “ChatGPT, Sora, and the API remain down. We have identified the issue and are rolling out a remediation.”
However, it looks like the ChatGPT outage won’t last much longer. OpenAI’s latest update claims that some users should start to see functionality return.
“We have identified a pathway to recovery and we are starting to see some traffic successfully return. Continuing to work to return service to normal.”
Searches for ChatGPT spiked on Google Trends, as did panicked comments on the OpenAI subreddit, with people trying to figure out why the service wasn’t working. Like any cloud-based software, it shows what can go wrong when you rely on external services for your daily work.
