Australians are more keen to play video games this summer over going to the cinema or attending concerts, according to new research by YouGov.
The Xbox-commissioned study found that six in ten Australians, led by Gen Z, have spent time gaming this year. By comparison, half of the surveyed Aussies went to cinemas, while 30% attended a concert. If you look at the price of going to the movies or a live gig these days, it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
This change in entertainment preferences also comes through in our budgets. The research claimed that Australians are expected to spend an average of $200 on gaming over the holidays, versus $86 for visits to the cinema.
“This holiday season marks a clear shift in entertainment preferences in Australia where gaming has become central to holiday activities,” said Eve Oorloff, Games Category Lead, Xbox Australia. “Over half of Aussies (54%) surveyed prioritise video games this season, with a significant 28% eagerly anticipating new releases.”
One of the new releases mentioned alongside the research is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a newly launched game based on the iconic film franchise. In addition to buying new games, subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus continue growing in popularity. Overall, Australians spent $4.4 billion on games in 2023, according to data from the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA).
“Playing video games offers unique connectivity, often across generations, which is crucial during the holidays,” said Ron Curry, CEO of IGEA. “The shift from cinema (which once dominated the holiday pop culture agenda), to playing games, highlights the mainstream appeal of this entertainment medium and the value for money games can offer consumers.”
