One of the biggest challenges of being in Australia at Christmas time is finding books and movies that aren’t all snow-based so the kids can see their experiences reflected. This is one of the reasons why Lego has partnered with iconic Australian author Sophie Beer on Santa’s Summer Sleigh. It’s a kid’s ebook and audiobook about Santa’s hunt for a more appropriate sleigh for summer.
What makes it special is that the sleighs were designed by children from across Australia and New Zealand. Not only did the kids’ illustrations make it into the book but they were also turned into life-sized Lego models for the Sydney Lego store. Ryan “Brickman” McNaught (best known for Lego Masters) built the creations out of thousands of Lego bricks.
Owen Harris (from Queensland) drew a Flying Bilby Sleigh, which McNaught brought to life using 49,930 bricks, which took his team 377.5 hours to build. McNaught also built Amelia Bryant’s Santas Surfboard Sleigh out of 4,856 bricks in 98.25 hours, and Apolosi Fosita’s Swamp Strider out of 14,492 bricks in 110 hours.
“I’m so excited to see my sleigh idea brought to life, not only in LEGO bricks but also in a book,” Harris said. “I wanted it to be perfect for Santa’s trip across the outback, and since I love animals, especially Australian wildlife, it’s pretty cool to see bilbies pulling the sleigh just like I imagined.”
“I hope Santa loves his Aussie sleigh as much as I do, and I can’t wait for everyone to play and create their own holiday adventures with Lego bricks.”
Where to read Santa’s Summer Sleigh
Available online as a free ebook and audiobook, Santa’s Summer Sleigh is one of many ways Lego tells stories.
“It’s been wonderful to see the creativity of Australian children who have reimagined what Santa’s sleigh could look like down under,” said Justine McKenny, Senior Director, Head of Marketing at Lego Australia and New Zealand. “We believe every Lego build tells a story which is why we’re also delighted to team up with beloved children’s author, Sophie Beer, to create a Christmas story that will inspire families to embrace the magic of the holiday season together.”
I’ve read the book, and it’s really fun! The pictures are vibrant, and the humour has enough levels that both kids and parents will enjoy reading it again and again.
The audiobook is available in both English and Te Reo Māori and can be found on the Lego website. The models can be seen in the Lego Store at the Pitt Street Mall until the 27th of December.
