Local telco Amaysim has announced that it’s acquiring the Australian-based customers of Circles Life, a fellow mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that uses Optus network technology.
Labelled a “strategic expansion” to add to Amaysim’s existing 1.7 million customers, more than 150,000 people are expected to transition over from Circles Life.
“This acquisition not only strengthens our position in the Australian telco market but also enables us to offer more Aussies the same customer-centricity, exceptional value, and outstanding customer service that define Amaysim,” said Vir Nath, VP of Amaysim.
“As Circles Life customers transition to amaysim plans over the coming months, they can look forward to accessing additional features, including 5G, unlimited data banking, and a dedicated customer service team.”
A regular among Australia’s cheapest SIM plans, Amaysim sells phone plans and, as of September 2024, NBN internet. Optus acquired Amaysim in 2021 but the MVNO operates as a standalone telco.
According to a press release, the transition between Circles Life and Amaysim will automatically happen over the next few months. Existing Circles Life customers don’t need to do anything for the changeover to take effect. An FAQ section on Amaysim’s website futher explains that Circles Life “will not continue to have mobile customers in Australia” following the acquisition.
At the time of writing, Circles Life’s cheapest phone plan without discounts starts at $15 per month, including 6GB of data. Amaysim, on the other hand, starts at $22 for a 28-day prepaid cycle, inclusive of 10GB.
A benefit of the customer acquisition spruiked by Amaysim is the availability of 5G connectivity on higher-priced plans. Circles Life only offers 4G plans, so transitioning customers will theoretically be able to get faster download speeds in 5G areas.
