Apple Invites sounds like an iPhone-exclusive Facebook Events

A new app has arrived on iPhone, Apple Invites, and it sounds like a souped-up version of Facebook Events for people entrenched in Apple’s ecosystem.

As explained in the official announcement, Apple Invites “helps users create custom invitations to gather friends and family for any occasion.” It manages RSVPs and lets users share music playlists and photo albums linked to the event. The app appears to be Apple’s answer to Facebook Events, a popular platform used for social gatherings.

Setting up an event, however, does require an account. Taking it another step further, an iCloud+ subscription is needed to create an event in Apple Invites. For those already subscribed to iCloud+, the cloud storage product that starts at $1.49 a month, it’s not much of an issue. Whether non-subscribers would pay to use an event management app is another issue.

Fortunately, only the event organiser needs an active subscription. Responding to an invite created by someone else isn’t locked to iPhone users or Apple account holders. For those who don’t have either, Apple supports RSVPs via a web browser.

Adding photos to the shared album or music to the shared playlist is another story. Only Apple Music subscribers can contribute songs to a shared playlist, with $12.99 the standard monthly price. Likewise, shared photo albums necessitate an Apple account, limiting the app’s full potential to the Apple faithful.

So, there are a few hurdles to jump over to get the best Apple Invites experience, but at least Android or PC users don’t miss out entirely. It’s a neat idea on paper, creating a sort of time capsule of events, replete with photos and tunes that you can look back on later. Apple One subscribers, like my family, look set to benefit the most from all the add-on features.
