Disney+ is the latest streamer to increase its price in Australia, raising subscription costs by as much as $30.
Taking effect on 19 February, subscribers to the 1080p Disney+ Standard tier will pay $2 more per month or $20 more for an annual plan. The 4K Premium plan costs an extra $3 per month or an additional $30 annually.
Plan | Old monthly price | Old annual price | New monthly price | New annual price |
---|---|---|---|---|
Disney+ Standard | $13.99 | $139.99 | $15.99 | $159.99 |
Disney+ Premium | $17.99 | $179.99 | $20.99 | $209.99 |
Disney only put the announcement out yesterday, leaving people with little time to consider subscribing before the new prices kick in. Current subscribers have a bit more time on their hands, with the new price starting on the first billing cycle after 26 March 2025.
Disney’s latest price increase comes only a week after it confirmed that ESPN content is coming to Australian and New Zealander Disney+ subscribers in the coming months. At almost the same time last year, Disney split its subscription model into two parts, effectively making 4K content more expensive to access.
Once the higher prices begin, streaming 4K content on Disney+ will be more expensive than Foxtel’s Binge, which currently costs $19 per month for its Standard tier. Netflix still takes the cake for Australia’s priciest 4K streamer; its monthly Premium plan costs $25.99. Meanwhile, Prime Video is one of the cheapest, included with a $9.99 Amazon Prime subscription. Prime Video includes ads, however, unless you pay an extra $2.99 per month.
Streamers have recently hogged the limelight in Australia, and not always for good reasons. Foxtel has copped most of it, courtesy of limiting access in remote Australia and raising Kayo Sports prices. A Disney+ price increase is just another step towards platform-holders seeking more money.
