Apple is planning a robot virtual companion, reports claim

A robot device that responds like a human is reportedly one of the next big things from Apple, alongside a suite of smart home devices, as the company looks to revisit its AI strategy.

As reported by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the in-development robot from Apple is designed as a tabletop device that looks like a tablet on a swivelling arm. Set for a 2027 release, it reportedly turns to face users when spoken to, relying on the long-delayed Siri overhaul so it can respond to more complex queries.

Gurman added that the robot will move to follow users during video calls, like FaceTime, with the option to use an iPhone as a remote control. Apple intends for the device to respond conversationally, like other chatbots on the market.

Fellow millennials who grew up watching Nickelodeon might have the same thought as me: this Apple robot sounds a lot like a table-mounted version of Karen, the sentient computer from SpongeBob SquarePants. Based on what Gurman has reported, personality could be a core part of Apple’s robot. Surely someone wants a snarky robot companion.

In addition to the robot, Apple has a smart display in the works that Gurman described as “similar to a Google Nest Hub”. Reportedly due for a launch mid next year, it sounds like Apple’s take on Amazon’s Echo Show devices, interactive screens that show information and play media via voice controls.

Apple also plans to make its own smart home security cameras, according to Gurman. There are already many home security brands in Australia and overseas, but Apple hopes its brand loyalty will encourage users to buy into its ecosystem.

Apple’s further foray into smart home devices could boost its home accessories division, which made less money year-on-year, per the company’s latest financial results. By comparison, strong iPhone sales helped ensure Apple’s profits remained steady.
