Electric vehicle brand Polestar has entered the record books with a marathon drive, proving that EVs can go the distance. In a certified Guinness World Record, the Polestar 3 drove an impressive 935.44km before needing to recharge.
It’s now the world record holder for the longest journey travelled by an electric SUV on a single charge. It’s not quite the 1,205km driven by the Lucid Air Grand Touring sedan in July, but that’s still quite the feat.
Over nearly 23 hours, three drivers took turns driving the Polestar 3 Long range Single motor on public UK roads to set the new record. The announcement from Polestar claimed the EV still had 20% of its battery capacity available after reaching its advertised 706km WLTP range, and managed to rack up more than an extra 200km afterwards.
It’s a well-timed record, following recent findings that some EVs fall short of advertised ranges by up to 23%, according to the Australian Automobile Association. It also goes to show that it’s possible to squeeze extra distance out of some cars.
Granted, a Polestar 3 sits at the premium end of EVs. The model tested for the record costs roughly $150,000 in Australia, according to Polestar’s website. Like any technology, however, high-end performance and features typically trickle down to more affordable price points in subsequent years.
Polestar UK Managing Director, Matt Galvin, believes the record is an example of how far EVs have come: metaphorically and literally.
“While the drivers pushed the Polestar 3 to the boundaries of its range capability, it goes to show how battery range has improved exponentially over the past few years,” Galvin said. “For a large premium SUV to go way beyond a London to Edinburgh distance is truly impressive and with this the adage that ‘EVs can’t go far’ has been very much consigned to the history books.”
