Australia escapes Nintendo Switch price hike as tariffs loom large

Nintendo has increased the price of the original Switch console in the United States, citing “market conditions”. Australians can breathe a sigh of relief for the time being, as the price increase doesn’t apply here.

Communicated via a short news post on Nintendo of America’s website, the video game company raised prices over the weekend across its suite of previous-generation hardware. All versions of the Switch — including the OLED and handheld-only Lite models — now cost more in the US and Canada.

An original Nintendo Switch now costs US$339.99, while the OLED model costs US$399.99, $40 and $50 more, respectively. When contacted by GadgetGuy, a local Nintendo representative confirmed that the price increases do not affect Australia or New Zealand.

Nintendo isn’t the only gaming company to raise hardware prices this year. The PS5 broke the $800 barrier in April, followed by Xbox’s pricier gear in May. Unlike Nintendo’s recent move, both price changes included Australia.

As noted by The Verge, Nintendo’s decision followed President Trump’s new wave of reciprocal tariffs. Countries involved in Nintendo’s production and supply chain, like Vietnam, have been impacted.

For now, the Nintendo Switch 2 price remains steady in the US. However, Nintendo has left the door open for change, saying that “price adjustments may be necessary in the future”. Various other Nintendo products are also more expensive alongside the Switch.

“Other Nintendo products, including certain Nintendo Switch 2 accessories, select amiibo, and the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, will also see adjustments,” Nintendo’s news post said.

Nintendo’s price increase may not have much of a short-term impact; the company sold fewer than a million of the previous-gen console in its latest financial quarter. Meanwhile, the Switch 2 continued its record-breaking launch success, shipping more than six million consoles in its first seven weeks on sale.
