Could Meta’s new glasses replace your phone altogether?

Could Meta’s new glasses replace your phone altogether?

Putting the new Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses on my face was an eye-opening experience, if you can excuse the pun. If all goes according to Meta’s plans, there will be even less reason to take your phone out of your pocket.

The glasses’ claim to fame is housing a full-colour monocular display that you can view through a single lens, instead of relying on both at the same time. As we’ve covered before, the specs pair with Meta AI to provide captions, directions, and information about anything you look at.

Instead of taking up your whole field of view, the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses show a small 600 x 600-pixel window about a foot-and-a-half in front of you. It’s like having your own personal heads-up display, like in a first-person video game.

Meta hasn’t confirmed an Australian release date yet; they’ll launch overseas first for US$799. I’ve seen enough to be very curious about how the glasses will impact phone use in the future.
