There’s something a bit different about the new Nothing Ear (3) headphones. On the surface, they look like another pair of earbuds, albeit with a fancy design. However, its charging case doubles as a microphone that’s meant to be better than the mic housed within a tiny pair of buds.
Nothing calls this tech “Super Mic”, which is activated by pressing a designated ‘talk’ button on the case. This embedded mic reportedly blocks out more background noise and records your voice more clearly.
Nothing intends for its Super Mic to be used for more than just clearer phone calls. When paired with one of its phones, like the Nothing Phone (3), the charging case can save voice memos and automatically transcribe them.
As an added bonus, you get to feel like Twin Peaks‘ Special Agent Dale Cooper every time you have something you want to say, holding up a recorder to your face. Some might find that a bit naff, but I think it’s cute and quirky.
After all this, you may be surprised to learn that the Nothing Ear (3) also operates as in-ear headphones. This newer $299 model sports a tweaked 12mm driver built to increase both bass and treble compared to the previous model.
Like a lot of Nothing devices, the earbuds and charging case include a lot of transparent design flourishes. They look quite unlike anything else on the market, while coming with an IP54 weather resistance rating. That means dust and sprinklings of water shouldn’t pose a problem.
On top of the case’s microphone, the earbuds house three mics of their own. These work for calls, too, in addition to powering noise cancellation. Nothing says the Ear (3) lasts up to 10 hours of music listening, reaching up to 38 hours with the case.
Pre-orders are open now online, with the Ear 3 launching at JB Hi-Fi on 25 September.
