Ikea recently announced a new range of smart home devices, all of which work with the universal Matter protocol. However, all of the details so far mainly concern its overseas launch. Good news: the Matter-compatible Ikea smart devices are coming to Australia.
A local Ikea PR representative confirmed to GadgetGuy that the new range will launch in waves, starting in January 2026. It’ll begin with the Swedish furniture giant’s latest smart sensors, followed by an updated range of smart light bulbs.
11 variations of the Kajplats smart bulbs are included, with various brightnesses, sizes, and colours to choose from. According to Ikea’s announcement, they span standard globes, directional spotlights, and smaller compact profile lights. Most of which are dimmable or can change colour by using smart home connectivity.
Also confirmed for Australia is a range of five new smart sensors, starting with the Myggspray motion sensor and Myggbett door/window sensor. The Timmerflotte temperature and humidity sensor does what it says on the tin, while the Klippbok water leakage sensor can send phone notifications and sound alerts when it detects leaks.
Arguably the most comprehensive of Ikea’s new Matter-compatible sensors is the Alpstuga air quality sensor. Capable of reading CO2 and PM2.5 levels, in addition to temperature and humidity, its data can then pair with Ikea’s air purifiers to react to live air quality levels.
Ikea also announced a series of new smart plugs and remote controls. However, these don’t have a confirmed launch timeline for Australia yet.
Ikea smart home range release date in Australia
According to a local Ikea PR representative, the Matter-compatible smart sensors will arrive in Australia beginning in January next year. Ikea’s smart bulbs are set to launch a few months later in April.
There’s no word yet on the local availability of Ikea’s smart plugs and remote controls. GadgetGuy has followed up to confirm local pricing for the confirmed products.
For reference, The Verge reported that the Kajplats bulbs will cost between £4 to £9 in the UK (roughly $8 to $18 AUD), while the sensors range from £7 to £25.
It’s a major smart home announcement, mainly because it combines low-cost devices with Matter technology. Matter-compatible technology can talk seamlessly with devices from other brands, letting you create automations without worrying about compatibility. Theoretically, an Ikea temperature sensor could then activate another brand’s air conditioner to maintain a home’s temperature without any manual input.
And if a company can do that successfully at a low price, like Ikea is promising, they might become the smart home brand of choice.
