New Spacetalk app aims to protect families amid social media ban

Although Australia’s youth social media ban is meant to keep children safe online, there are still many unknowns. If families relied on soon-to-be-banned apps to communicate, what’s the next logical step? Australian tech company Spacetalk has its own solution: a new app designed to keep families connected in a safe and secure environment.

With the new software launch, Spacetalk has an ecosystem it calls the ‘Freedom Platform’, consisting of an app, GPS smartwatches, and SIM plans. Primarily targeted at the ‘Sandwich Generation’ — the roughly 1.5 million Australian adults responsible for looking after children and older relatives — the ecosystem is meant to help parents and carers via a single app.

“Families should not need multiple apps and devices to stay connected and look out for each other,” said Simon Crowther, CEO of Spacetalk. “We designed Spacetalk as a Freedom Platform: one app, one view, where families can stay in touch, manage responsibilities, and support independence safely and simply.”

Spacetalk’s new app lets admins create ‘Spaces’, groups within the app that can include specific family members as needed. It doubles as a messaging platform as well as a way to check the safety of loved ones.

For those without smartphones, or those not confident using them, Spacetalk’s smartwatches function as a wearable tracker. Kids can wear them to and from school, while there are specific models for the elderly that include fall detection and SOS safety features.

These wearables communicate with the Spacetalk app, so a family can check that relatives are safe at a glance. If anyone strays from designated safe zones, like school or other family members’ homes, the app sends a notification. A notification is also sent when family members arrive safely at a designated location.

How much does the Spacetalk platform cost?

Free to download, the Spacetalk app includes various subscription tiers. ‘Lite’, a free tier, supports up to four family members. It limits the designated safe places to two, which is meant to give users an idea of whether the platform will suit the family unit.

Then there’s ‘Plus’, which costs $7.99 per month or $74.99 annually, which expands the support up to 99 members and five separate Spaces. It lets the family admin designate up to five safe places and routes, in addition to allowing two connected wearables to access the Spacetalk platform.

Until the end of December 2025, the Plus tier will be free, letting Australian families try it out as the youth social media ban begins. It’s also included in the cost of any mobile SIM from Spacetalk, which starts at $20 per 30-day recharge.

As part of the Black Friday sales, Spacetalk is also discounting its Loop and Adventurer 2 kids smartwatches by 40 per cent until 1 December.

Spacetalk’s latest launch has a similar philosophy to the HMD Fuse phone and HarmBlock+ platform launched in August. While HMD’s technology uses AI to automatically block inappropriate content, the Spacetalk app will let admins selectively block family members from accessing specific websites and apps.

Both are new technologies aimed at keeping children and older family members safe, which might prove more complicated once the social media ban starts.
