Twitch now included in Australia’s youth social media ban

Popular livestreaming platform Twitch will now be included in Australia’s youth social media ban, according to an update from the eSafety Commissioner.

It now joins Kick among those confirmed as “age-restricted platforms” and therefore subject to Australia’s Social Media Minimum Age legislation, which takes effect on 10 December 2025. According to the eSafety Commissioner’s announcement, a self-assessment from Twitch met the legislation’s criteria “because it has the sole or significant purpose of online social interaction”.

It follows Meta’s recent warning to teens impacted by the social media ban, and Roblox‘s move to limit in-game chat to users within similar age groups. Although Roblox is not currently considered an age-restricted platform, it will require all Australian users who wish to use in-game communication features to undergo an age estimation check from December onwards.

At this stage, “no further assessments” are planned by the eSafety Commissioner before 10 December.
