Games come in many different forms; they let you save the world from existential threats, play out your sporting fantasies, or turn your back on plumbing to rescue kidnapped princesses. Today’s top-selling game is none of those things. Big Walk, made by Melbourne studio House House, is all about the joys of solving puzzles with your friends among Australian-inspired wilderness.
You might recognise the name House House — they’re the small team responsible for 2019’s multi-award-winning Untitled Goose Game, the delightful game where you play as a mischievous goose. Big Walk, which launched overnight on PlayStation 5 (included as part of a PS Plus subscription), Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, has already reached the top of Steam’s global top sellers list.

The game sees you play as whimsical blobby characters trying to find their way through bushlands while overcoming various obstacles. Unlike a lot of multiplayer games, you’re not meant to hear your friends all the time. Big Walk relies on a proximity chat feature, meaning you only hear other players’ voices when they’re nearby.
This makes figuring out puzzle solutions a little tricky, but you’re not left without workarounds. You can make your blob characters gesticulate wildly to try to communicate information, or use items like megaphones to chat over long distances.
Whatever magic House House infused Big Walk with must have worked. At the time of writing, the PC version holds a 94 Metacritic rating, making it one of the best-reviewed games of the year.
It already looks like Australia’s strong run of independently made games made by small teams — Hollow Knight: Silksong and Cult of the Lamb — is set to continue.
Everything I’ve seen so far looks wonderful, so I can’t wait to venture out on a Big Walk with my friends soon.
