An NBN FTTP upgrade now costs less for some Australians

Faster and more reliable home internet could soon be within reach of more Australians, courtesy of a change to the NBN FTTP upgrade eligibility.

As spotted by WhistleOut Australia, NBN Co has lowered the barrier of entry to those wanting to upgrade from fibre to the curb (FTTC) to fibre to the premises (FTTP) technology. NBN Co recently published its 2025 Annual Service Improvement Plan, revealing that 100/20 Mbps plans are now enough to qualify for a connection upgrade.

This puts the eligibility in line with fibre to the node (FTTN) upgrades, making it more affordable to benefit from a better connection quality. Under the previous requirements, FTTC customers had to purchase a pricier 250/25 Mbps NBN plan to switch over to FTTP.

Earlier in the year, NBN Co announced that millions of Australians resided in eligible FTTP upgrade areas. As reported by the ACCC, FTTP connections encounter better speeds and far fewer service interruptions than other technologies. NBN Co estimates that 3.5 million premises currently on FTTN, and 1.5 million on FTTC, will be able to upgrade by the end of 2025.

Lowering the barrier of entry to better quality internet offers some reprieve, particularly in the context of increasing NBN prices. People on FTTP are also more likely to take advantage of the upcoming speed increases. NBN Co aims to boost 100 Mbps plans to 500 Mbps, and implement 2 Gbps speeds in the near future.

To check your upgrade eligibility, NBN Co has an address checker on its website. You can also compare the cheapest NBN plans to find the best deal on home internet.
