SpinTel is the latest telco to launch an NBN 500 plan, as the country prepares for faster NBN speeds in September.
It joins Exetel and Tangerine in offering new internet plans reaching 500Mbps download speeds and upload speeds hitting 50Mbps. Once the NBN’s September upgrades kick in, 500/50 will take over existing 100/20 plans on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) residential connections.
“NBN Co’s speed upgrades are coming in September, but many households need that extra bandwidth now,” said SpinTel CEO Liam Bal. “We’re giving our customers the chance to get ahead of the rollout and enjoy faster upload speeds today, without paying top dollar.”
Priced at $74 per month for the first six months, the new SpinTel NBN 500 plan then costs $84.95 thereafter. It’s slightly cheaper than Tangerine’s standard $88.90 monthly price, while Exetel currently takes the cake with a flat $80 monthly fee (albeit without any introductory discount).
Bal previously claimed that Australians pay too much for home internet, after a SpinTel-commissioned study found that people paid “up to $50 per month extra for speed they don’t require.” However, with the NBN wholesale speed upgrades coming at no extra cost to retailers and customers, faster internet will be available at more affordable prices.
However, the introduction of faster internet plans prompted the ACCC to update its broadband industry guidance, requiring telcos to clarify that current home networking setups may affect maximum speeds. Most Wi-Fi 6 modems and routers should be able to handle 500Mbps, although the introduction of 2Gbps plans might warrant a hardware upgrade.
For now, here’s how the market currently looks for internet plans with 500Mbps download speeds and above, per the cheapest NBN plans.
